Panama City Beach has a reputation as a spring break destination — loud, crowded, party-focused. And while that's part of what PCB offers, it's honestly a small part. The real Panama City Beach is one of the most naturally beautiful places on the Gulf Coast, with emerald water, white sand, incredible marine life, and a string of state parks that rival anything in Florida.
We've been operating tours on these waters for over a decade. This guide covers the best of what PCB genuinely has to offer — from the unmissable to the underrated.
🌊 On the Water
Swim with Wild Dolphins at Shell Island
This is the one activity in PCB that genuinely surprises people — not because they didn't expect it to be good, but because they didn't expect it to be that good. Resident bottlenose dolphin pods live in St. Andrews Bay year-round. A guided tour takes you directly to where they feed and play, and most encounters happen within 20 minutes. Add snorkeling in crystal-clear shallow water and time on an undeveloped barrier island, and this is simply the best single activity in Panama City Beach.

The bay-side shallows around Shell Island have exceptional visibility, calm water, and a sandy bottom teeming with starfish, pufferfish, blue crabs, and flounder. It's safe for non-swimmers and kids — most areas are 3–5 feet deep — and the marine life density is genuinely impressive. Gear is included on Salty Dogs tours.
Kayaking in St. Andrews Bay
For independent adventurers, kayaking the calm bay waters is a peaceful way to explore. You can occasionally spot dolphins from a kayak, though guided boat tours give you far more reliable encounters and cover more ground. Several outfitters near the marina rent kayaks by the hour.
Sunset Cruise on the Gulf
PCB sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico are genuinely spectacular — deep oranges, pinks, and purples reflected off calm water. Several operators offer evening cruises timed for sunset. If you're doing a dolphin tour, the late afternoon departure slot (3:30 PM) often catches the golden hour on the way back.
🏖️ Beaches & Nature
St. Andrews State Park
Consistently ranked one of Florida's best state parks, St. Andrews sits at the eastern tip of PCB and offers pristine Gulf and bay beaches, nature trails, fishing, and stunning views of Shell Island across the pass. The pier is excellent for fishing, and the swimming area on the Gulf side is one of the nicest on the Panhandle. $8/vehicle entry. Shell Island ferry service also departs from here seasonally.
Camp Helen State Park
On the western end of PCB, Camp Helen is a hidden gem — a coastal dune lake ecosystem that's rare globally and only found along this stretch of Florida. The park has walking trails through pine flatwoods and stunning views of Lake Powell and the Gulf. Almost no one in the tourist crowd knows about it.
Walk the PCB Public Beaches at Sunrise
The main beach along Front Beach Road is genuinely beautiful — white quartz sand and emerald water that rivals anything in the Caribbean. Go at sunrise or early morning before the crowds arrive and it's a completely different experience. Free access at multiple public access points along the road.
Sea Turtle Nesting Season (June–July)
PCB beaches are active sea turtle nesting grounds. Loggerhead and green sea turtles nest along the Gulf side of Shell Island in particular. Several organizations run guided morning nest-monitoring walks during nesting season — a quiet, extraordinary experience for families and wildlife lovers.
🎯 Activities & Entertainment
Pier Park
PCB's main outdoor shopping and entertainment hub — a large open-air complex with restaurants, shops, a Ferris wheel, and regular events. It's genuinely well-done for what it is: a lively, walkable area that works for all ages. Good for a rainy afternoon or an evening out after a day on the water.
Gulf World Marine Park
A family staple in PCB for decades, Gulf World features dolphin and sea lion shows, shark feeding, and interactive marine animal encounters. Worth noting: Salty Dogs wild dolphin tours offer a very different kind of experience — unscripted, in the animals' natural environment. Both have their place depending on what you're looking for.
Parasailing over the Gulf
Floating 400–800 feet above the Gulf of Mexico with views stretching for miles in every direction — this is one of those experiences that's hard to describe and easy to remember. Several operators on the beach offer tandem and solo parasail flights. Go early morning for the calmest conditions.
Deep Sea Fishing
The Gulf waters off PCB are rich with amberjack, grouper, red snapper, and king mackerel. Half-day and full-day charter trips depart from the marina area. If you're serious about fishing, full-day trips into deeper water give you the best shot at larger species.
Ripley's Believe It or Not
A classic family stop — over 500 exhibits of oddities, illusions, and curiosities. Not exactly outdoors, but it's a reliable 2–3 hour activity for families with kids who've had enough sun for the day. Good air conditioning bonus on hot summer afternoons.
🍽️ Food & Dining
Bayou Bill's Crab House
A PCB institution — casual waterfront dining with fresh Gulf seafood, blue crab, and the kind of atmosphere that doesn't try too hard. Go at sunset for the views. This is what eating in PCB should feel like.
Thomas Donut & Snack Shop
Open since 1971, Thomas Donuts is a PCB legend. The lines are long for a reason — the glazed donuts are genuinely among the best you'll ever have. Go early morning before the rush or late night when the crowds thin out.
Schooners — The Last Local Beach Club
Self-proclaimed as the "Last Local Beach Club," Schooners sits directly on the Gulf and serves good food with live music and cold drinks as the sun goes down. This is a PCB sunset experience that stands on its own. Get there early enough to grab a table with a Gulf view.
🗓️ Events & Seasonal
Thunder Beach Motorcycle Rally & Seasonal Events
PCB hosts a packed events calendar throughout the year — Thunder Beach Motorcycle Rally (spring and fall), Ironman Florida, seafood festivals, and free beach concerts. Check the official PCB events calendar when planning your trip — there's almost always something going on worth building around.
🌡️ Best time to visit Panama City Beach
May and September are the sweet spots — warm water, manageable crowds, and lower prices than peak summer. June–August is peak season with the warmest water and most activity, but book everything well in advance. October–November is underrated — water still warm, dolphin pods very active, and PCB is much quieter.
